I was a friend of Nick and Liz when we lived in Selborne. Nick was a good companion and we spent many enjoyable hours together. I read of his passing with great sadness and send my thoughts to Liz and Jamie.

Robert Ravenhill
I had not seen Nick for around 15 years. But when I heard of his untimely passing, I was deeply shocked and saddened. The summer holidays I spent in Devon sailing with James and Nick in Salcombe estuary are some of the happiest and enduring memories of my childhood and teens. He was a wonderfully warm, kind man, and he will always be an integral part of those memories, with his smile, distinctive chuckle, and the twinkle he always had in his eye!

Thoughts
I spent about 4 years working alongside the Autosub team under Nick’s inspiring leadership from 1997. I learned a lot from his calm, kind, patient approach which transformed the vehicle from an experimental prototype into an effective tool for science. His legacy will live on, when we send robots to explore the oceans of other worlds there’ll be some of Nick’s knowledge embedded in there.

I first met Nick when I was a new 18 year old IOS recruit. He was staring, with a puzzled expression on his face, at a piece of kit that he had been asked to get working. I saw that puzzled expression many times over the following years, especially when things weren't going quite right with Autosub. However, no matter how bad things seemed, Nick always stayed calm and supportive. We could never have achieved so much without Nick at the helm of the project.

Nick was a really amazing guy and I learned so much from him. With Nick leading the Autosub team, we had adventures which most people could hardly dream of, taking us to the far corners of the world. Without his calm, steady leadership we wouldn’t have been able to do the incredible things that we did. He was a pretty much an egoless leader who in his own way got the best out of everyone. Nick knew also the importance of having fun and we had plenty of that!
